Summer Seed Saving

lettuce seed pp

With the nice dry weather of January and a couple of further weeks in the back room to ensure the seed harvest is completely dry, I finally got to sorting out seeds and cleaning them for storage. The bulk of seeds we will use over swales or as green mulch come Autumn.

Throughout January I was harvesting seeds that were ready, adding them to the bulk of seeds already sorted. Many of these will be used for salad greens or for establishing new beds and filling the area quickly so that the grass doesn’t get a decent hold.

I have been collecting Walking Stick Cabbage, Nasturtium, Warrigal Greens, Marigold, Rocket (arugula), Poppies, California Poppy, Dill, Lettuce, Fennel, Carrot, Beans, Field Peas and Parsnip.

      1. I don’t hear that very often. Most people expect them to grow all year, and do not understand or tolerate how chaparral plants bloom quickly in spring and are then done. They can go all year by sowing as they go, but only if watered sometimes.
